“Truly, I say to you, you look for me, not because you have seen through the signs, but because you ate bread and were satisfied.”
He wasn't simply talking about physical bread. He was speaking about something much deeper: receiving the Word of God. They had witnessed the miracle, but they had failed to recognize what the miracle was pointing towards. To understand this more deeply, we can return to Deuteronomy 8:3, where God speaks of the manna He provided for the Israelites:
“He made you experience want, he made you experience hunger, but he gave you manna to eat which neither you nor your fathers had known, to show you that man lives not on bread alone but that all that proceeds from the mouth of God is life for man.”
This is the food that remains. In the past, God had given the Israelites a providential food—the manna—when they were lacking everything in the desert. But if God were content simply to be our benefactor, and if we only turned to Him when we wanted favors, we would eventually become nothing more than beggars who barely give thanks and are always asking for more. That is what happened with the Israelites. After receiving the manna, they rebelled against God and ultimately died, failing to trust Him.
But now, the gift of God is different. The bread that comes down from heaven is not a thing. It is Someone. The Jews ask Jesus, “What must we do to perform the works of God?”And Jesus answers: believe. The Father does not first demand a list of accomplishments. He asks for faith: “Believe in the one whom God has sent.” And yet, they immediately ask Him for a sign. Mind you, He had just fed thousands of people with five loaves of bread and two fish. Just think about that for a second. They had witnessed something extraordinary, yet they still struggled to recognize the Son of God. Why? Simply because the one sent by God was just a carpenter. They were looking for something spectacular, something that matched their expectations of what God should look like. And instead, God was standing before them in the person of Jesus.
Here, the bread is what proceeds from the mouth of God. It is both the Word of God and the Son who comes down from heaven, becoming the spiritual food and source of life for the believer. Jesus then says:
“Truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven. My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. The bread God gives is the one who comes from heaven and gives life to the world.”
And yet again, the Jews reply: “Then give us this bread always.” And Jesus answers with one of the clearest declarations in Scripture:
“I am The Bread of Life; Whoever comes to me shall never be hungry, and whoever believes in me shall never be thirsty”
